FMCSA Issues ELD Waivers

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has issued two 90-day waivers from the ELD mandate.

The first waiver was granted to the Truck Renting and Leasing Association. The waiver was granted for companies that rent and lease trucks on a short-term basis. That waiver grants an exemption from the ELD mandate on trucks that are rented for 30 days or less.

The second waiver was also a 90-day exemption from the ELD mandate, and was granted to carriers that haul livestock and agricultural commodities.

FMCSA believes that this 90-day extension will give them time to study the effect of ELDs more thoroughly on these types of carriers.

Both waivers took effect on December 18, 2017 and expire on March 18, 2018.

This means that these carriers will not be required to install ELDs until the March 18, 2018 deadline.
