Iowa DOT Accepting Applications for New Truck Grants

The Iowa Department of Transportation is now accepting grant applications for the Volkswagen Settlement Environmental Mitigation Trust funding programs.

The grants are being offered as a part of a 2016 agreement reached between the EPA and Volkswagen due to a complaint that alleged that Volkswagen had altered emissions tests on their vehicles.

The application category that is applicable to IMTA members would be for new or replacement freight or port drayage trucks, in which slightly over $1 million dollars is available.

The Trust is very specific regarding the types of projects that can use settlement funds. Project actions and expenditures that are allowed under the settlement include repowering or replacing the following diesel vehicles and/or equipment types:

* Class 8 local freight or port drayage trucks (large trucks)
* Class 4–7 local freight trucks (medium duty trucks)

Eligible trucks from the list above would be those with 1992 – 2009 model year diesel engines. Replaced trucks and engines must be scrapped in accordance with the program.

For more information on the funding available, or to apply for a grant, visit the program website here. Questions may be submitted in writing via email to and responses will be posted on the website for all applicants to review.

Deadline for applications is 5:00 pm CST, February 17, 2020.
